In  the market, there are  four large popular and leader companies providing most chipset for layer 2 10/100M networking switch: Realtek & ADMtek & IC+ & Broadcom.
 
1. Realtek:   as a main chipset supplier in China for low networking market, Realtek chose separated MAC/PHC chipset-making construction, RTL8316 + RTL8208 for 16port switch, and RTL8324 + RTL8208 for 24port switch, both provide 4M DRAM and 8K MAC. Quality is not bad, and has been well proven for long time.
 
2. ADMtek:   acquired by German Infoneon this year, ADM also chose separated MAC/PHC chipset -making construction, ADM6926 + ADM7008 for 24port switch, provide 4M DRAM and 4K MAC. ECOM , for example, will use ADMtek chipset on 8/16/24 port switch.
 
3. IC+:  It is the lower cost chipset supplier in Taiwan than Realtek/ADM, also chose separated MAC/PHC chipset -making construction, IP1726 + IP108 for 24port switch, provide only 1.5M DRAM and 4K MAC.
The short effect is that the chipset is easy to hot and unstable and 1.5M DRAM is not enough for high-speed transmission. Obviously, the price is lower , as well as the performance.  This way you get a buffer RAM of only 1.5Mb. Very short. 
 
4. Broadcom:   USA and leading chipset supplier globally on networking swtich and higher standard switch, it has absolute quality networking compatible and stable transmission performance. It chose Integrated MAC/PHC chipset -making construction, BCM5328 for 16/24port switch, provide 4M DRAM and 4K MAC.  LanPro uses broadcom chipsets for higher speed and reliabilty.
